Anatomy of an anthem

As they filing onto the court, one by one to prepare for the national anthem before Saturday's game against Seton Hall the UConn women's basketball players were giddy with anticipation.

The first sign that it was not just going to be another rendition of the anthem may have been when freshman guard Caroline Doty pulled out her digital camera. Maya Moore, usually so serious in the minutes leading up to the game, had a huge grin on her face and as she and Kaili McLaren headed towards the scorer's table to grab the microphones, the XL Center crowd roared its approval.

Having already gone through an emotional ceremony honoring seniors Renee Montgomery, Cassie Kerns and Tahirah Williams, the tears were ready to start flowing when McLaren and Moore began their melodious take on the national anthem.

"Coach (Geno Auriemma) at dinner was trying to get us to sing the national anthem because a few years ago (Stacy Hansmeyer sang the anthem)," Moore said. "It all happened so fast. One minute we were talking about who can sing the best and next minute we are singing the national anthem for the seniors. It was fun, we are a pretty (musical) team and it was great to do that."

The win put UConn in position to complete just the fifth undefeated regular season in the program's history Monday at Rutgers. Ironically, the only blemish on UConn's regular season last season came at Rutgers.

It was also a special day for two of the three players who have committed to UConn.

Kelly Faris, the only senior to sign with the Huskies, had a triple double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as her Heritage Christian of Indianapolis squad routed Austin 90-69 to advance to Saturday's Indiana 2A championship game. Faris and the Eagles have a chance to complete a 4-peat having won the title during her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons.

Junior Samarie Walker had 19 points and 16 rebounds to lead Chaminade Julienne of Dayotn, Ohio to a 51-44 win over Xenia in Ohio's Division I sectional final.

Stefanie Dolson, the only other junior to orally commit to UConn, will lead her Minisink Valley of Slate Hill, N.Y. into the postseason on Thursday against the winner of Tuesday's Newburgh Free Academy/Monroe-Woodbury in the New York Section 9 Class AA semifinals.

North Babylon High junior guard Bria Hartley, the top point guard on UConn's recruiting radar, had 18 points but it wasn't enough as playing without suspended senior Eugeneia McPherson, North Babylon lost to Copiague 58-49 in the New York Suffolk County Section XI Class AA semifinals.
