Banks, Mosqueda-Lewis extend their HS careers
Future Huskies Brianna Banks and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis led their high school teams to postseason victories on Tuesday night.
Banks, a 5-foot-9 guard for Fayette County HS in Fayetteville, Ga., had eight of her 14 points in the third quarter in Fayette County's 55-45 win over Mundy's Hill in the Georgia AAAA tournament. Fayette County advances to meet Warner Robins in Friday's quarterfinals.
Mosqueda-Lewis, a 6-foot wing at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif., had 20 points and 11 rebounds in a 57-37 win over Santa Monica in the CIF Southern Section IAA semifinals. That sets up a highly-anticipated matchup with Brea Olinda in Saturday's championship game. In USA Today's national rankings, Brea Olinda and Mater Dei are ranked No. 1 and 2 so the winner of the game would likely end up as national champions.
Kiah Stokes, the third member of UConn's incoming freshman class, will lead her Linn-Mar of Marion, Iowa squad against Ankeny in the Iowa 4A quarterfinals.
As for the juniors who have committed to UConn, both Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck have their teams in contention for state titles.
Breanna Stewart had 18 points as Cicero-North Syracuse topped Christian Brothers Academy 75-26 win in the Section III Class AA semifinals on Tuesday. Cicero-North Syracuse will play Utica Proctor in Saturday's championship game.
Tuck and Bolingbrook HS will face Chicago's Whitney Young in the Illinois Class 4A semifinals on Friday with the winner playing the Zion/Park Ridge winner in Saturday's championship game. Bolingbrook is ranked fifth and Whitney Young ninth in the national poll.
