UConn, Maryland agree to home and home series
UConn and Maryland have agreed to play a home and home series over the next two seasons beginning with the 2012 Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 3 to be hosted by UConn for the second year in a row.
Unless the teams meet in the NCAA tournament this season, it will be the first time the two teams willl square off. The return game will be played at Maryland during the 2013-14 season. It should be noted that the Huskies and Terrapins were placed in the same NCAA tournament site in the subregionals in 2000 and 2007. In 2000 Maryland lost to Colorado State in the first round or else the Terps would have been UConn's second-round opponent. In 2007 when the NCAA used eight subregional sites, UConn and Maryland were both placed at the Hartford site even though there were in different regionals.
Carol Stiff of ESPN said that the matchup between the two top 10 teams came together relatively quickly.
"In a few weeks, maybe a month for that matchup," Stiff said. "I just talked to (Maryland coach) Brenda Frese today and the kids are thrilled to be playing UConn. Her son Tyler has leukemia so this is very dear to her heart that she is a part of this game next year. They are excited, I am excited, UConn is excited, we just pulled it off.
"Hopefully it is a 1 vs. 2. I think it is going to be a terrific game like tonight's. I think it is going to be a terrific game. We don't know. This will be second consecutive year for UConn. They briung a great crowd, a very competitive team, they deserve the national attention."
