Banks tears her ACL
UConn sophomore guard Brianna Banks suffered a season-ending knee injury in Saturday's win over St. John's.
It was confirmed on Monday that she suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. No date has been set for the injury.
Banks went down with 10:02 left in the first half of Saturday's game against St. John's but the extent and severity of her injury wasn't known until she had an MRI done on her right knee on Monday..
She had to be helped off the court and into the locker room where she was examined by UConn team doctor Tom Trojian and athletic trainer Rosemary Ragle. She returned to the bench late in the first half and watched the entire second half from the bench.
Banks is one of four Huskies to play in each of the first 21 games. She is averaging 17.1 minutes per game and is averaging 7.3 poiints with 35 assists and 25 steals.
Before the season started she admitted to doing some soul searching when she returned home to Georgia for a few days and when she came back she drew rave reviews from teammates and coaches for her improved attitude and level of play.
“It started gradually changing as the year went on but in the summer when I went home I came back with a completely different mindset,” Banks said. “If I wanted to succeed I had to have a completely different mindset.”
Banks' absence figures to put more pressure on freshman guard Moriah Jefferson to bring energy and a defensive presence off the bench.
“I am extremely disappointed for Brianna,” UConn coach Geno Auriemma said in a statement. “She had shown great improvement and has been a big part of our success this season. I know she will work extremely hard to get back on the floor as soon as possible.”
