Painful memories?
Geno Auriemma has gone on record more than a few times expressing his utter indifference about the record winning streak his UConn women's basketball team is currently on. Therefore, it shouldn't shock too many people to hear that Auriemma hadn't given a thought about returning to the city where the Huskies last lost a game.
That came in the 2008 national semifinals to Stanford in Tampa. On Thursday UConn will open Big East play at South Florida so a local reporter asked Auriemma about any lingering memories from that defeat.
"There's always something. There is always somebody out there trying to thrown some flies into the ointment or into the soup, whatever you want to say," Auriemma said with a laugh. "I hadn't really thought of that. I don't think it matters one way or the other. This is a completely different team other than Maya (Moore) and Lorin (Dixon), there was nobody who played in that game in Tampa. They probably couldn't where we stayed. I am looking forward to playing again. When you play three games in three days like we just did and you start getting yourself in game mode, you want to play again right away because we played really well on Sunday. I am anxious to come down there, it is always a great environment. (South Florida coach) Jose Fernandez gets everybody excited about coming into the building and we have an awful lot of fans down there."
Auriemma was in a playful mood on a conference call on Tuesday. He saved his best line for a response to a question about his intentions to meet up with USF football coach Skip Holtz, who used to coach UConn.
I just bought a new iphone which has cameras on both sides," Auriemma said. "I am going to try to get to a practice or something, see if I can take his picture and maybe film some other stuff just in case."
