Scouting LSU
As we look at 2008 in the rear-view mirror, it is time to look ahead.
In the world of UConn women's basketball, next up is a struggling Louisiana State team. LSU was the team which stepped up and filled the void left by Tennessee's decision to discontinue its annual regular-season series with the Huskies. CBS signed up to televise the game since LSU has been a regular visitor to the Final Four.
However, LSU graduated seven players who combined to score nearly 6,000 points and play in more than 850 games.
Here's an idea of what the Lady Tigers bid adieu to:
Sylvia Fowles: Career leader in games played, rebounds and blocked shots and second in scoring.
Quianna Chaney: All-time program leader with 203 3-pointers, fifth in scoring and assists
Erica White: Second all-time in assists, 10th in scoring
Ashley Thomas: LSU's fifth all-time rebounder
RaShonta LeBlanc: Fourth on the program's career assist list.
Not surprisingly, LSU has been struggling a bit, taking a 5-4 record into today's game against Nebraska. As a point of reference, LSU's fourth loss last season came against UConn on Feb. 25.
"They had the same starting five for a long time or the same core of players for a long time," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. "Now all of a sudden those guys leave and it is a really huge transition time for them. They are not scoring as many points as they were, their defense is still going to be good. They have always been a pretty good defensive team but their ability to score point has suffered because of all the great offensive players that they lost. I am sure it is going to be one of those low-scoring games, I am sure they want to make it one of those low-scoring, half-court kind of games."
As Auriemma mentioned, LSU is still a top-notch defensive team, allowing 49.8 points per game. If the Lady Tigers hold Nebraska to 44 points or less, they will move by Texas A&M to become the Division I leader in scoring defense. Currently A&M is giving up 49.3 points per game followed by LSU (49.8) and West Virginia (49.9). It won;t be easy as the Huskies average 89.9 points per game, second nationally behind South Florida's average of 93 points a game.
The game is set to tip off a few minutes after noon on Saturday from the XL Center.
