Freshmen point guards step up

As stunning as it is to believe, Bria Hartley said she never faced fellow freshman point guard Shoni Schimmel on the court with the exception of the WBCA All-American game.

They made up for lost time in UConn's 78-55 victory over Louisville on Saturday.

Hartley had a career-high 24 points, six coming on a pair of clutch 3-pointers during a 17-5 second-half run, and also had a career-high eight rebounds. Schimmel finished with a team-high 15 points and six assists.

"She's a pretty aggressive kid," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. "She certainly doesn't shy away from the ball and she doesn't shy away from wanting to shoot it and wanting to make a play. I think she's a lot like Bria. She needs to solid and she needs to be consistent for them to help their team. Based on what I saw, there's very little that when I watch her you can say she struggles with. She seems to have a good overall game."

HAYES TO BE EVALUATED ON SUNDAY
Before the team flies out to North Carolina for Monday's game against the 11th-ranked Tar Heels.

Hayes collided with Maya Moore in the first minute of the game and suffered a mild concussion.

UConn women's basketball trainer Rosemary Ragle said in a statement that "symptoms of a mild concussion were clearing quickly by the end of the game. Tiffany will be re-evaluated by the team physician tomorrow morning."

Timing is everything. If UConn had played a legitimate Top 25 opponent instead of Louisville, the Huskies NCAA record home 71 game win streak would have been snapped. UConn fans understand turnovers and dumb fouls could cost the Huskies a game in the one-and-done the NCAA tournament. And the UConn coaches hate turnovers and dumb fouls. UConn committed 18 turnovers and 14 fouls against a team with 6 freshmen. Division 1 Top 25 Coaches should have their players prepared to step right in and contribute, regardless of the opponent. UConn is past the half way point of the regular season, so please stop playing the freshman excuse card.

Tiffany Hayes is not an All-American, only consistently inconsistent. Stefanie Dolson and Heather Buck will not be NCAA Players of the Year, WNBA Rookies of the Year, and WNBA rebound record holders. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis will not lead UConn to 90 straight wins and 2 straight undefeated NCAA Championships, while winning 2 NCAA Player of the Year awards. Tina Charles and Maya Moore are extremely rare gifted players who are UConn legends, so please stop comparing other players to them unless those players have actually achieved the same greatness.

CT media loves to praise the UConn coaches, players, and recruits. But the media fails to provide constructive criticism of questionable coaching, lackluster player performance, and opponent competition level. UConn coaches and players are not perfect, so please treat them accordingly. It is well known that UConn strives for perfection in practices and games. It would be nice if CT media would strive for perfection in every article, instead of the standard boring safe routes like “the glass is always half full” and “cut and paste redundancy”.
