Familiar names in WNIT field

A pair of Connecticut schools, a team featuring the sister of a current Husky and two others led by prolific Connecticut-born scorers are among the participants in the WNIT.

Hartford will host Harvard on Thursday and the same day Boston University, led by former Wilbur Cross star Chantell Alford, will host Sacred Heart. Meriden's Damika Martinez, the MAAC Player of the Year as a sophomore, leads Iona on the road against Drexel while Morgan Tuck's sister Taylor Tuck's Illinois team hosts Miami (Ohio).

Also in the field are a pair of teams joining UConn's conference next season as Southern Methodist
plays at Bowling Green and Memphis travels to Arkansas.

Finally, I wondered out loud if Quinnipiac could have made the NCAA tournament field even with a loss in the NEC final since there was speculation that a Toledo team with similar credentials was expected to make the field. Well, I got my answer as Toledo, despite being ranked in the top 25 for part of the year, did not receive an at-large bid and is playing in the WNIT.
