UConn commit dazzles in regional final
UConn incoming freshman Saniya Chong had 39 points, six rebounds, seven assists and 11 steals in 3 1/2 quarters to lead her Ossining (N.Y.) team to an 83-51 victory over Lourdes on Sunday in the New York Section 1 Class AA championship game at the Westchester County Center.
Chong hit a shot just inside the half-court line at the end of the first quarter and another at mid-court as time expired in the third quarter (although the second one was waived off as she was called for traveling). Predictably, she was named the tournament's MVP.
Chong led Ossining to its third straight regional title and now the Pride will advance to the Class AA state tournament to face Section IV champion Horseheads on Tuesday night.
Chong has 2,829 points which makes her the sixth all-time leading scorer in New York high school girls' basketball history. She needs 42 points to catch former University of Virginia star Tammi Reiss (who starred at Eldred from 1983-88) for the No. 5 spot. It should be noted that the scoring totals for all five players include more than four seasons of competition while Chong's numbers are only for the last four seasons. She has had her 300th career 3-pointer in the game.
“I’ve had an amazing four years here and coming out with the gold ball three times in a row is a fantastic feeling,” Chong told the Journal News.
