UConn's season opener not on TV

UConn will play 30 regular-season games and 29 will be televised. Unfortunately for those interested in seeing the first game of the 2014-15 season, Friday's game at UC Davis is the lone exception.

Since I first made mention of this when the television schedule was announced I have received emails inquiring why the UC Davis game is only available on ESPN3.com or via the ESPN app. I reached out to UConn Senior Women's Administrator Deb Corum who in turn forwarded my request for more information to Neal Eskin, the Senior Associate Director of Athletics.

So here's the deal. Since UC Davis is the home team, the contract was negotiated by UC Davis and the Big West Conference. There were efforts by UConn to have the game televised.

DirecTV subscribers do not have access to ESPN3 unless they are on a college campus but Eskin pointed out that ESPN3 is available in 92 million homes and Comcast, Cox, Charter, Cablevision and AT&T U-verse are among the providers which carry ESPN3.

Finally, there are ESPN3 blackout rules when the game airs on SNY as it will not be available on ESPN3 in the SNY coverage territory but since the game is not being televised, there are no blackout restrictions.

AT&T customers were switched to Frontier in a buyout and despite assurances that the change would be seamless, they are not able to access ESPN3. So reduce that 90 million number by the number of old AT&T customers.

I can't stand sloppy journalism.
