Wrapping up Friday's practice at UConn

The original plan was for the media to be able to watch the final 30 minutes of today's practice but with things not proceeding as well as Geno Auriemma would have liked, we actually got to see closer to an hour's worth of drills.

My first impression is that junior guard Moriah Jefferson must have devoured some left over Halloween candy because she was running and jumping through the roof making it difficult for her teammates to get much done.

I was impressed with how vocal Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was which is not something you could always say about her during her first three seasons and of course she was draining one 3 after another.

As for the freshmen, Kia Nurse often times looked like a three-year starter with how easily she was able to either score or set up her teammates. Seeing how well she got from 3-point range is a pleasant surprise because that was one of the few questions I had about her game. It seemed like every time I looked up Courtney Ekmark and Gabby Williams were colliding with each other going for loose balls and Sadie Edwards took out the tray holding water bottles as she attempted to save the ball from going out of bounds.

Auriemma said the freshmen are way to quiet for his liking and after having reliable players like Stefanie Dolson and Bria Hartley to lead practice, things have been more of a struggle as the Huskies introduce the four freshmen into the equation and ever since Auriemma bragged about how well Saniya Chong has been practicing she has been struggling.

The post-practice interview session with Auriemma might have been more entertaining than the practice itself. He talked about life after Dolson and Hartley, how he has no timetable for retirement and countless other topics including how he is teaching himself how to play the piano on his iPad, some on the record but most of them not so much.

515KML Vocal, wonderful. Jefferson being Moriah, wonderful. Nurse sinking 3's superb. Gabby/Ekmark/Edwards working hard--got to give Geno a fresh breath of hope. Now all this has to translate into big time games--practice is one thing--games are not predictable or easy.

Only DT was a loud mouth as a Freshman. Freshmen are looking, seeing, taking in, and trying to fit in--make no waves, except on the court. Is Saniya still the 2 guard starter--dosen't sound like that.
Forget Steff and Bria they are gone, this group is what Geno has--and let us think of them.
