The Tiger tamer

Van Chancellor's post-game press conferences are always entertaining and he certainly was on a roll following LSU's 76-63 loss to UConn Saturday.

Asked about the play of Renee Montgomery, who had 10 points and three assists in UConn's 18-3 second-half run but he couldn't help but heap more praise on junior forward/center Kaili McLaren who came up big against LSU for the second season in a row.

"She (McLaren) doesn't play against anybody but us. If I were on the Connecticut staff I would tell her that Rutgers has on purple, she is just a Tiger tamer."

A few other thoughts on the game:

As has been the case in other key games this season, UConn coach Geno Auriemma shortened his bench playing just eight players. Maya Moore played the entire game, Montgomery was in thgere for 39 minutes.

Kalana Greene looked more like the pre-injury Kalana Greene than at any other time this season, soaring for rebounds, looking fluid on defense and making an impact on slashing drives.

Freshmen Caroline Doty and Tiffany Hayes struggled on offense. Hayes has her moments defensivewas solid on defense but the two freshmen each had air balls and were a combined 1 for 9 from the floor.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma felt that sophomore Lorin Dixon was the most effective player defensively against LSU's Allison Hightower. Dixon was matched up against Hightower for 3:48 in the second half and during that span Hightower did not attempt a shot and picked up three fouls. Fittingly, Dixon drew an offensive foul on Hightower to foul out the Lady Tigers best player.

Just an observation about LSU, I wouldn't want to see them in my bracket come NCAA tournament team. Freshmen Ayana Dunning and LaSondra Barrett are going to be a handful in the post for years to come for LSU.

Sadly, after a four-year run, it seems as if the series between the two schools is history. LSU was the school which stepped up when Tennessee ended the series with UConn and there have been four pretty memorable games.

"Our league has voted going to 16 games and I don't want to schedule myself out of a job, that's the way it is," Chancellor said.

Chancellor, the head coach of the 2004 U.S. Olympic team, said he expects both Montgomery and Maya Moore to be on the 2012 U.S. Olympic team. It remains to be seen if Chancellor's prediction comes true.
