Hayes honored

When Louisville coach Jeff Walz devised the game plan against UConn, he told his players not to guard freshman Tiffany Hayes and if she makes them pay, she would be the Big East Player of the Week.

Well, Hayes was able to capitalize to the tune of a career-high 23 points in a 93-65 victory. Hayes followed that up with 14 points, nine coming on three key first-half 3-pointers. Her reward was being named the Big East Freshman of the Week.

PROVIDENCE , R.I. – Louisville ’s Angel McCoughtry became Cardinals’ all-time leading scorer and tallied a game-high 43 points to break the BIG EAST single-game scoring record against Providence on Saturday. For her effort, McCoughtry has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week. Connecticut ’s Tiffany Hayes had a breakout game against then-No. 6/10 Louisville to garner Freshman of the Week honors.

McCoughtry finished the week averaging 33.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game as the Cardinals went 1-1 on the week. She had a record-setting performance in the Cardinals’ 81-49 victory at
Providence on Jan. 31. McCoughtry now holds the BIG EAST single-game scoring record with 43 points and also became the all-time leading scorer in Louisville men’s and women’s basketball history with her fourth point against the Friars. McCoughtry broke Darrell Griffith’s record of 2,333 career points and now has a total of 2,373 points. In a 93-65 loss at top-ranked Connecticut on Jan. 26, the senior forward recorded 24 points and 13 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. She finished the game with seven rebounds, five assists and eight steals. For the week, McCoughtry shot 48.9 percent from the field and was 20-of-22 from the foul line.

Hayes helped the Huskies to wins over then-No. 6/10 Louisville 93-65 at home on Jan. 26 and at Georgetown 80-61 on Jan. 31. The freshman guard averaged 18.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. Hayes shot 50.0 percent from the field (12-of-24), including 9-of-18 from 3-point range. She recorded a season-high 23 points, while shooting 8-of-13 from the field and 6-of-10 from 3-point range against Louisville . In the Georgetown win, Hayes added 14 points and six rebounds. She has posted double-figure points in nine games this season, including the last three straight.
