A little WNBA talk
In case you haven't heard the news, the 2009 WNBA All-Star game will be played on July 25 at 3:30 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena, which last hosted the event in 2005.
Connecticut Sun season-ticket holders can start purchasing tickets Wednesday and mini-plans including the all-star game will also go on sale on Wednesday. Season-ticket holders from other WNBA teams will be able to buy tickets in two weeks while the general public can purchase tickets in April.
WNBA president Donna Orender knows tickets will go quickly since the Sun's capacity is about half of what Washington held back in 2007 and said the league is considering adding viewing parties inside the Mohegan Sun facility to give fans other options.
Orender admitted that decision to cut the roster limits from 13 to 11 was not an easy one but it was a concession the league needed to make to move forward. She also said the league still wants to expand although there is no concrete info to pass on regarding the process of selecting cities for expansion purposes.
"The big vision is to grow this business, sometimes in order to do that you have to take a little bit of a step sideways to be able to get the business model where we like it," Orender said. "Those are the kinds of moves we are making right now.
"The level of talent and as it exponentially grows through this league, I am amazed at how much talent doesn't make the league."
There's nothing new to report on further roster moves for the Connecticut Sun. The Sun is still waiting for the contract to be signed by Anete Jekabsone, a star of Latvia's Olympic team. The only two WNBA free agents on the Sun's radar are Lauren Jackson and Tina Thompson but both players are still undecided about their WNBA future or future destination if there is one.
Nykesha Sales will be reunited with Lindsay Whalen but it will not be with the Connecticut Sun. Sales is set to join the ZVVK USK Prague team Whalen is a member of. It doesn't appear as if Ketia Swanier will be returning to Poland to play for UTEX Row Rybnik. Swanier played six games for the team and averaged 13 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3.5 steals.
