Stewart commits to UConn

Breanna Stewart, who multiple recruiting databases have ranked as the top player in the Class of 2012, has committed to UConn.

Stewart, a 6-foot-3 forward from North Syracuse, N.Y., was among those in attendance at UConn's game against Duke at Gampel Pavilion. Following UConn's 87-51 victory, Stewart informed the UConn coaching staff of her decision.

"Heather (Breanna's mother) and I knew she was going to commit but we wanted to let the other schools know," said Brian Stewart, Breanna's father.

Stewart joins Morgan Tuck, her teammate on the U.S. Under-17 national team, as the first two players from the Class of 2012 to commit to UConn.

Duke and Penn State were the other two main competitors in the recruitment of Stewart.

I asked Brian what other than the obvious aspect of playing for the seven-time national champions appealed to his daughter.

"Breanna likes to be challenged," Brian Stewart said. "She's (going to UConn) because she'll be challenged as a basketball player and a student."

Stewart first suited up for Cicero-North Syracuse as an eighth grader. This season she is averaging 24.4 points (on a team averaging just 45 points per game), 9.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.7 steals and 3 blocks per game. Despite facing double and triple teams in every game, Stewart has scored at least 17 points in every game this season with a high of 37 against St. John the Baptist on Dec. 29.

Stewart also was a teammate of 2/3 of UConn's incoming freshman class courtesy of USA Basketball. She was on the U-16 national team in 2009 with both Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Kiah Stokes and on this year's squad which won the U-17 world title with Mosqueda-Lewis. Speaking of Stokes, here is a question and answer session she took part with courtesy of the folks at USA Basketball
