Maya Moore, Tiffany Hayes named first team All-Big East

UConn senior forward Maya Moore and junior guard Tiffany Hayes were named to Big East's first team.

Moore joins former Rutgers star Cappie Pondexter as the only players in conference history to earn first team honors four years in a row.

Notre Dame led the way with three first team selections as Skylar Diggins, Natalie Novosel (also named the league's most improved player) and Devereaux Peters (also selected as the defensive player of the year) were joined by DePaul's Keisha Hampton, Georgetown's Sugar Rodgers, Monique Reid of Louisville, Marquette's Angel Robinson, Syracuse's Kayla Alexander and Liz Repella of West Virginia were also named to the first team.

UConn's Bria Hartley was a second-team selection while Kelly Faris was an honorable selection. Hartley and Stefanie Dolson were named to the All-Freshman team as was former Hopkins star Lauren "Lady" Okafor, a freshman forward/center at Providence.

Moore, Diggins, Hampton and Rodgers were unanimous first team selections while Dolson, Hartley, Louisville's Shoni Schimmel and Notre Dame's Natalie Achonwa were unanimous all rookie picks.

Cincinnati's Shelly Bellman and DePaul's Sam Quigley were co-winners of the Sportsmanship Award.

The Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards will be announced on Friday between sessions of the Big East tournament.

For those interested in such things, Geno Auriemma is not allowed to vote for his own player for Big East Player of the Year and he said he voted for DePaul's Felicia Chester. For the record, Chester did not make first or second team so other coaches don't hold the DePaul senior in as high a regard as Auriemma does.
