UConn recruits Stewart, Tuck win state player of year award

UConn incoming freshmen Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck were named the Gatorade state players of the year in New York and Illinois respectively.

Stewart is a 6-foot-4 forward at Cicero-North Syracuse. N.Y. who is averaging 25.5 points, 13.2 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, 3.2 assists and 3.2 steals while Tuck is a 6-2 forward out of Bolingbrook High  who averaged 29 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.7 steals  as a senior.

The third member of UConn's next freshman class, Moriah Jefferson, was beaten out for the Texas state player of the year award by Duke signee Alexis Jones. The Connecticut winner was Tolland's Kristin Schatzlein.

The state winners are finalists for the Gatorade national player of the year award.

MCCALL, RIDGEVIEW FALL IN PLAYOFFS
The junior season of UConn recruiting target Erica McCall ended when her Ridgeview of Bakersfield, Calif. lost 54-41 to Arroyo Grande Wednesday night in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 tournament .

The 6-foot-3 McCall finished with 21 points.

Another UConn recruiting target in the Class of 2013 is in action today as Diamond DeShields leads her Norcross team against McEachern in Georgia's AAAAA semifinals at 4 p.m.. I can't vouch for the quality of the broadcast but a live feed of the game is available on GHSA.tv. If Norcross wins, it will play for the state title on Friday at 7 p.m. GHSA.tv will be providing a live feed of that game as well.

Another Class of '13 target will have a playoff game on Friday at Saniya Chong leads her Ossining squad to a playoff win on Friday against Binghamton and Stewart leads her Cicero-North Syracuse squad past Colonie on Saturday, their teams will meet on Mar. 16 at 8 p.m. in a New York AA regional semifinal at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy. Chong will also be featured in the Faces of the Crowd in the Mar. 12 edition of Sports Illustrated.
