Edwards visits again

Former Mercy High star Sadie Edwards made her second unofficial visit to UConn yesterday.

Edwards and her mother Lisa were in the stands when UConn held a practice before watching the NCAA tournament selection show.

Edwards left Mercy to attend Nazareth High in New York but following the death of Nazareth coach and New York AAU legend Apache Paschall, the 5-foot-10 Edwards transferred to Blair Academy in New Jersey. More of a wing player when she was at Mercy, Edwards made the move to point guard and has the versatile set of skills that UConn looks for in its guards.

Other than Courtney Ekmark, a 6-foot wing from Phoenix, who has already committed to UConn and dynamic 6-5 forward A'ja Wilson out of Columbia, S.C. who is at the top of the Huskies' Class of 2014 recruiting wish list, there is still plenty of work to be done for UConn in recruiting the Class of 2014.

UConn coaches were out in California to watch Jordin Canada's Windward team beat Class of 2015 recruiting target Katie Lou Samuelson's Mater Dei squad in the CIF South Section Open Division title game and at the Ohio Division I championship contest to see Kathryn Westbeld led her Fairmont team to its first state title. Christ the King star Sierra Calhoun is another player the Huskies are looking at while injured Nevada guard Gabby Williams is another intriguing prospect.

One player who will not be a part of the next UConn recruiting class is Texas forward Brianna Turner. I've confirmed through a well-informed recruiting source that UConn is no longer recruiting Turner.

With just one player coming into UConn in the fall, it is imperative that the Huskies ink a decent sized class so don't be surprised if other names emerge between now and the early signing period in November.

Speaking of Westbeld, the Ohio Division 1 title game is being rebroadcast on the SportsTime Ohio statiion (channel 662 on my DirecTV grid) at 5 a.m. tomorrow. It's hit or miss on whether games are blacked out on that station but if you have access to that station, it might be worth checking out.
