New voices

While Tuesday's game at South Florida and Saturday's one at West Virginia will be on CPTV, there will be some different announcers calling the action.

Drew Fellios will call the action and Adrrrikk Frazier will provide the color commentary from the Sun Dome Tuesday night. On Saturday, Hoppy Kercheval and Warren Baker will be on the call.

Tuesday will mark the first time former Winter Haven High star Tiffany Hayes will play in Florida as a member of the UConn program. She is pretty fired up about the game and has been bugging fellow freshman Caroline Doty for as many tickets as she can spare. Hayes' former Winter Haven teammate Brittany Denson is a senior forward/center who has started all 15 games for host South Florida.

I will spare you details of the long journey from Connecticut to Tampa because - let's be honest - it was 87 degrees at one point when I was driving around today so I don't think people want to hear me whine about the slow-moving traffic both in Connecticut or Florida or long wait at the car rental counter as I walk around in shorts and a short-sleeved shirt on a beautiful evening in Tampa.

Before I left for the airport this morning, I noticed that recent UConn oral commitment Stefanie Dolson had 21 points in the championship game of the Pearl River Tournament Sunday and still her Minisink Valley team lost by 26 points (61-35 to host Pearl River).

Here's a little more info on Laguna Hills' junior Lauren Engeln, who is the top uncommitted perimeter player on UConn's recruiting radar. Englen leads 10-4 Laguna Hills in scoring (17.3 points), rebounding (11.1) and also tops the team with 45 assists and 36 steals. Engeln is not shooting the ball as well as she did in her first two seasons but with a young supporting cast, she is being asked to do more this season. The last time UConn coach Geno Auriemma enticed a big-time perimeter play from California to head East, it worked out pretty well as all Diana Taurasi did was help the Huskies win three straight national titles. Only time will tell if he is able to get Engeln to follow Taurasi's lead. Although I have not seen her play, the comparisons should end at their home state based on the numbers they put up. In 73 career games, Engeln had 30 3-pointers. She more than makes up for it with 694 rebounds and 207 steals so obviously Engeln gets after it when she is on the court.
