Maya set to join select company

If Maya Moore scores 20 points tonight, she would become the 45th Division I women's player to hit the 2,500-point mark and fourth Big East player as Louisville's Angel McCoughtry scored 2,779 points, Providence's Tracy Lis had 2,534 points and Boston College's Sarah Behn finished with 2,523 points. It should be noted that DePaul's Diana Vines and Sue Wicks of Rutgers scored more than 2,500 before their schools joined the Big East.

Thanks to UConn women's basketball SID Pat McKenna and Jennifer Rodgers of the NCAA for researching this on my behalf since the NCAA record books cuts the list off in the 2,600s.

Changing gears, there were a couple of overseas signing that caught my eye.

First, Australian teenager Gretel Tippett was signed by the Logan Thunder of Australia's WNBL. Tippett, who is said to be considering UConn and Duke if she opts to come to the U.S. to play collegiately, had been playing with the Australian Institute of Sport through the end of 2010.

Also, McCoughtry was signed by Fenerbahce, the Istanbul, Turkey team that Diana Taurasi was playing for until she was suspended by the Turkish basketball federation for testing positive for a banned substance after a Nov. 13 game. Now there tend to be a wave of signing in the EuroLeague after Jan. 1 so I am not sure if McCoughtry is being signed to take Taurasi's place on the roster but I will look into that.
