Setting the stage for UConn/DePaul

Fans are just starting to roll in for the game between No. 2 UConn and No. 9 DePaul.

A few items of note:
Maya Moore entered the game as the nation's leading scorer at 24 points per game, percentage points ahead of Dawn Evans of James Madison.

Looking through the NCAA Division I record books, Sue Bird (who led the nation in free throw percentage in 2002) and Rebecca Lobo (the leader in blocked shots in 1994) are the only Huskies to lead the nation in a major category. It should be noted that Tamika Williams' field goal percentage in the 1999-2000, 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons are better than the national leader but did not attempt enough shots to make the list.

Carol Callan of USA Basketball is in attendance as UConn coach Geno Auriemma (who was the coach of the gold-medal winnning U.S. team at the FIBA World Championships), DePaul head coach and U.S. assistant coach Doug Bruno, UConn's Maya Moore (a member of the U.S. squad) and UConn/U.S. video coordinator Keith Anderson will receive championship rings and pose with the championship trophy. When I spoke with Carol last night, she said all the members of the U.S. team will receive rings but most likely it will be done on an individual basis during the WNBA season.

Auriemma said there are hopes of having a U.S. training camp between the end of the Final Four and start of WNBA training camps. There's only about a two-week window in May for that to happen.

While I have not been able to officially confirm that it is her, it looks like Xylina McDaniel and her mom are sitting two rows behind the UConn bench. McDaniel's high school coach said the plan was for her and her mom to make the trip up here weather permitting.
