Future Big East teams picked middle of pack in CUSA poll

Conference USA announced its preseason poll and preseason all-conference team today and none of the teams heading to the Big East next year cracked the top four.

Memphis received one first-place vote and was picked to finish fifth out of 12 teams making the Tigers the most highly thought of team among the four departing Conference USA for the Big East next season.

Southern Methodist, Central Florida and Houston were picked to finish eighth, ninth and 10th respectively.

Of the eight players named to the preseason all-conference team, SMU junior Akil Simpson is the only one who plays for one of the future Big East teams with remaining eligibility when they make the move to the Big East.

Tulane was picked to win the Conference USA title followed closely by UTEP. Rice's Jessica Kuster was named the preseason player of the year.

In other news, UConn announced that Bobby V will be performing at First Night on Friday at Gampel Pavilion. That makes sense since he doesn't have much else to do since being fired by the Boston Red Sox. Oops, my bad, I think I have the wrong Bobby V. The one providing the entertainment is a singer formerly known as Bobby Valentino.

Admission to the event is free and Gampel Pavilion's doors open at 4 for the UConn/Cincinnati women's volleyball match. The men's and women's basketball players will be signing autographs fro m 5:30-6:30 p.m. The only actual basketball festivities expected to take place is the dunking competition which will feature defending champion Ryan Boatright of UConn's men's team. There's no word whether UConn women's freshman phenom Breanna Stewart, who has been known the throw down the occasional dunk in the past, will be taking part in the dunking competition.
