Checking in from Milwaukee

First thing I noticed upon arriving in Milwaukee early last night was that I could feel all of my extremity's. Such was not the case in my last trip two years back when the temperature never got above zero. I knew I was in trouble in 2007 when the locals were complaining about how cold it was.

Now about this year's game, if you happen to be in the neighborhood there are tickets still available. Marquette women's basketball sports information director Amy Ufnowski said earlier in the week that they were anticipating a sellout. It will be interesting to see if that is the case. Certainly the walk-up numbers won't be helped by the coverage of the game in the local paper. Went through the sports section of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel after breakfast and there is no mention that there is a game. Actually, that is not entirely true. On page 2C under a package called "2-Minute Drill" after highlighting the upcoming games for the Milwaukee Bucks, Marquette, Wisconsin and Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball, Milwaukee Admirals (of the AHL) and Milwaukee Wave (no idea who or what they are), tonight's game is listed in small print. It is the first game under a section beginning with "ALSO:" It is mentioned again on page 7C under a listing of the television and radio schedule. But there is no advance, no advance capsule, no advertisement promoting the game. Yes, we do live in a different world in Connecticut.

I will be interested to see or hear the student section tonight. Two years ago, a large, vocal student section turned McGuire Center into a rowdy environment. That is the main focus (as well as UConn barely escaping with a four-point win) of the advance in today's Register

Looking at the latest NCAA stats (not including Friday's games) UConn leads all Division I teams in scoring offense (86.7), scoring margin (32.7), field goal percentage (52.7), assists per game (21.8), assist/turnover ratio (1.54) and of course winning percentage and are in the top 10 in four other categories. The only stats where UConn's not in the top 20 are free-throw percentage (69.9, ranking 123rd), steals per game (8.6, No. 133) and 3-point percentage defense (30.8, No. 131).
As a point of reference, Marquette doesn't rank in the top 50 in any category and are ranked in the top 100 in just four of the 14 categories.
