Busy Friday for UConn recruits
Four of the five of the players who have committed to UConn were in action on Friday playing games in the high school tournament.
First, let's start with the seniors.
Brianna Banks had 15 points as Fayette County defeated Warner Robins 71-39 in Georgia's AAAA quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals on Friday at Valdosta State.
If you go by the national rankings, the showdown between UConn signee Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis' Mater Dei and Brea Olinda could be the most anticipated game of the high school season. Behind 16 points from Mosqueda-Lewis second-ranked Mater Dei defeated No. 1 Brea Olinda 63-54 in the CIF Southern Section IAA championship game.
Kiah Stokes wasn't as fortunate. Despite her 22 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks shots, Linn-Mar lost to Iowa City West 65-58 in overtime in the Iowa 4A semifinals. Srokes sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer with six seconds left in the second half. But when Stokes fouled out of the game with 2:22 left in overtime, her team was promptly outscored 7-0 to end Linn-Mar's season at 22-3.
Now for the report on the two juniors.
Morgan Tuck had 10 points and nine rebounds as Bolingbrook defeated Whitney Young in another showdown of teams ranked in the top 10 in the national polls. Tuck's older sister Taylor (who is headed to Illinois) hit the game-winning free throw in overtime as Bolingbrook advanced to its sixth straight Illinois 4A Championship game with a 50-49 win.
Breanna Stewart will lead her Cicero-North Syracuse (N.Y.) team against Proctor in the New York Section III Class AA championship game on Sunday in Utica. Stewart had 29 points against Proctor earlier this season.
