Back to work for Huskies
There are countless absolutely outrageous statistics which can be thrown out there to demonstrate the dominance of the UConn women's basketball program over the last couple of decades. However, yesterday when I was thumbing through the UConn media guide I found another one.
When UConn plays Rutgers tonight in the fourth and final Big East quarterfinal it will be the first time since 1986 that the Huskies are heading into the Big East tournament coming off a loss. Yes, I wrote 1986. That was Geno Auriemma's first season at UConn.
If Rutgers plays like it did in last night's game against Marquette, UConn shouldn't have too much trouble picking up its 27th win of the season. After the Rutgers/Marquette game I interviewed Scarlet Knights' senior April Sykes about her time playing AAU with UConn's Tiffany Hayes. Towards the end of the interview I asked her what Rutgers needed to do better to give UConn a game "everything" was her answer. There will be more on a pretty entertaining interview with Sykes later today.
Tomorrow in Springfield Marist and Fairfield will play in the MAAC final. If Fairfield wins you can mark it down that the Stags will be UConn's first-round opponent in the NCAA tournament. Fairfield is hosting the subregionals so it has to be placed in Bridgeport. There's no way that the NCAA put a subregional in Connecticut and will not send UConn there so if Fairfield gets into the field of 64, its reward will be to play the seven-time national champion Huskies.
