ESPN announcing teams are ...

For those interested in such things, Pam Ward and former UConn star Rebecca Lobo will call the three games in the Bridgeport subregional while Dave O'Brien, Doris Burke and Holly Rowe will be the team broadcasting the games in Kingston, R.I.

Former UConn star Tamika Raymond will be a part of the team calling the games at the College Station, Tex. subregional.

Staying on the subject of former UConn stars, the U.S. Olympic team will be announced during the Final Four festivities. Former Huskies Sue Bird, Swin Cash, Tina Charles, Asjha Jones, Renee Montgomery, Maya Moore and Diana Taurasi are among the 21 candidates for the 12 spots. UConn's Geno Auriemma is the U.S. head coach but not on the committee responsible for making the final selections.

Finally, former UConn stars Jamelle Elliott and Jen Rizzotti have led their Cincinnati and Hartford teams into the WNIT. Cincinnati will host Duquesne while Hartford will host Syracuse on Friday. Former UConn assistant coach Tonya Cardoza's Temple team is also in the WNIT and will play at home against Quinnipiac on Thursday.

Also former Hillhouse star Andreana Thomas and Hofstra will play host to Harvard on Thursday night, Ansonia's Ashley Prim and her St. Joseph's squad play at home against Boston University, Mercy High graduate Rachel Roberts and Villanova will host American University on Thursday and former UConn guard Jacquie Fernandes is an assistant coach for a Fairfield team which will play Drexel on Thursday.

Jim, do you have a prediction for the 12 players on the USA Olympic roster? There are going to be some WNBA super stars not playing in the Olympics. Bird, Taurasi, and Tina should be locks. Not convinced Maya makes it. Sue and Asjha probably on the wrong side of the bubble. Like I know anything. :-)

I would say Bird, Taurasi, Charles and Moore would make it. It will be interesting which player among Cash, Jones, Dupree etc. etc. etc gets picked while I would consider Montgomery have the longest odds of any of the UConn players. I'd say that joining Bird, Taurasi, Charles and Moore would be Augustus, Catchings, Fowles, Griner, McCoughtry and Parker leaving a spot for another guard and forward.

Thanks for your quick reply Jim.

Do you know if there is a cutoff date when USA Basketball can make roster changes? With the injury history of Parker and Augustus, it is quite possible another injury occurs during early WNBA play.

Griner, Catchings, and McCoughtry give the USA a great defensive team. Thanks again.

I was referencing the WNIT in my post but you are correct about Mel Thomas being on the staff at Florida Gulf Coast.

I don't know the exact date of the roster deadline but Carol Callan said recently that there will be alternates included and I'd have to assume they would be at positions where there are injury concerns.
