UConn recruiting targets earn honors from Gatorade
The Gatorade State Player of the Year winners were announced earlier today and while none of the four UConn signees made the cut, there were plenty of players on the Huskies' recruiting radar who were among the winners.
Leading the way is South Carolina POY A'ja Wilson, a 6-foot-4 forward at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School who has already earned two major national player of the year awards.
In the Class of 2015, California winner Katie Lou Samuelson, Georgia winner Asia Durr, Louisiana recipient Kalani Brown, Maryland POY De'Janae Boykin and Wisconsin honoree Arike Ogunbowale were among the winners as was Class of 2016 recruiting target Erin Boley who was Kentucky's state player of the year.
Connecticut's winner was Capital Prep junior Kiah Gillespie.
As for UConn's signees, Courtney Ekmark did not play for a high school team as a senior, Kia Nurse played in Canada and Gabby Williams had her senior season ended prematurely due to a torn ACL. Sadie Edwards was in the running for the New Jersey POY award which went to Stanford signee and former UConn recruiting target Taylor Rooks.
Speaking of recruiting, UConn coach Geno Auriemma was in Ballwin, Missouri to see Class of 2015 recruiting target Napheesa Collier score 30 points in Incarnate Word's 57-44 playoff win over MICDS. It was at least the second time this season that he went to see Collier play so obviously Collier's pretty high up on the Huskies' wish list.
