UConn incoming freshmen meet with the media

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Kiah Stokes sat down to talk with half a dozen members of the Connecticut media and addressed all sorts of subjects from the grueling workouts UConn strength and conditioning coach Amanda Kimball puts them through, an upcoming trip to Europe, feeling like a part of the UConn family as well as what the freshman class will bring to the 2011-12 UConn team.

The third freshman Brianna Banks, headed home for the weekend so she was not available to the media on Friday.

Here is what they had to say when I asked them to give a scouting report of their fellow freshmen.

"(Brianna Banks) is a great player, an amazing athlete," Stokes said. "Playing against her in pickup is tough. I am glad I don't have to guard her. She always works hard, she is down to earth and is a great girl. She is definitely going to make an impact on this team.

"Kaleena, she is an amazing player. What she does is she makes shots. It is her job, I guess. She barely misses. It is great that she is going to be on the team this year and she will definitely impact us right away. I couldn't ask for any two better teammates coming into my freshman year at Connecticut."

As for Mosqueda-Lewis' take on Banks and Stokes:

"Brianna is a pure athlete," Mosqueda-Lewis said. "Whenever she is out there on the court, she can get to the basket at will. She is so quick and has such great hands that everything that goes by, she gets a hand on the ball wherever you are. The way she moves her body when it is in the air, I don't even know how she makes some of these shots. Her and Tiffany Hayes have the best body control I have ever seen in my life. She has a pretty nice outside jump shot too so that is going to be deadly, that is going to be useful to us this season.

"As for Kiah, she has those long arms. You think you can get a shot off ... She was at the free-throw line and I was at NBA 3 range and tried to shoot it. She came out and blocked my shot. She is going to deadly in there, she is going to be a shot blocker so we are going to have a lot of help inside and she has a nice little mid-range jump shot. Her and Stefanie are deadly from the high post, she gets rebounds as well."

The three freshmen, taking advantage of an NCAA rule which allows them to take summer classes and work out together, have already started to form a strong bond.

"So far in workouts, when we are dying we are right there next to each other (saying) 'come on, you can do it. We are almost done,'" Mosqueda-Lewis said. "We've been picking each other up in workouts so far and I think it is going to continue through the season. We are freshmen here, we came in together, we have to be there for each other all the time."
