Groups drawn for World Championships

The Geno Auriemma-coached U.S. team was placed in Group D with Angola, China and Serbia while UConn signee Kia Nurse's Canada squad is in Group B along with France, Mozambique and host Turkey for the FIBA World Championship for Women.

Group A consists of Brazil, Czech Republic, Japan and Spain while Australia, Belarus, Cuba and Korea are in Group C.

Play in the tournament begins with pool play on Sept. 27 with each team facing the other three teams in their bracket. The last-place team in each group is eliminated from medal contention while the winner of each pool received a bye into the quarterfinals.

The way the bracket is set up, the Group C and D winners (barring upsets) would meet in the semifinals meaning that the U.S. and Australia could meet in the semifinals.

The U.S. opens with China on Sept. 27, will play Serbia the next day and wrap up pool play against Angola on Sept. 30.

It's a tough draw from Canada with Olympic silver medalist France and fifth-place finisher Turkey in the same group. Canada's opener is against Mozambique on Sept. 27 before playing Turkey on the 28th and France on the 30th.
