Radio/TV info for Notre Dame game

Since the UConn men play Texas at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and the women face Notre Dame at 2, there's no way both games can be carried on WTIC-1080. Bob Joyce was thoughtful enough to mention to me after the Villanova game that the women's game will be on WTIC's FM station which is 96.5 on the dial for those who prefer to listen to the game on the radio rather than on television.

Also, the game will be on CBS and not on either CPTV or any of the ESPN stations.

I finally got around to listening to all the interviews I taped after the Villanova game, something deadline issues simply wouldn't allow on Wednesday night and perhaps no quote stood out more than what UConn coach Geno Auriemma said about UConn's home-court advantage after he was asked about the Huskies winning an NCAA Division I women's basketball record 70th straight home game.

"At one time, this (Gampel Pavilion) used to be the hardest place in the country to play at. I don't think it is that anymore, times have changed. At one time every single game was sold out and the electricity was like it was for the Florida State game (at the XL Center). This used to be the hardest place to play but it's not like that any more."

The announced crowd for the Villanova game was 7,168, which was about 70 percent of capacity. There were four other home games this season that drew fewer fans including a season low 6,989 against Marquette. Last year the Iona game was the only UConn home game to draw fewer than 7,500 fans while five of the nine home games have failed to top 7,500 this season. Before than, you'd have to go back to the two games at the Hartford Civic Center against Maryland-Baltimore County and Wisconsin-Green Bay in the 2007 NCAA tournament to find games played either in Storrs or Hartford that failed to break the 7,500 mark so I understand what Auriemma was saying. The days of selling out every regular season game at UConn like they did as recently as the 2004-05 season are over. A lot of programs would love to have only 7,168 at a game so it's not exactly like the fans are abandoning the Huskies.

just wondering...has there been a change in ticket prices? parking cost more? certainly gasonline costs quite a bit more!

There's no questioning that the economy plays a large role in the lack of sellouts and I don't think UConn goes out of its way to fix that problem. While it's $8 to park at Gampel, it's a little more in Hartford. I also think the Connecticut Sun impacts things as well since basketball fans on a fixed budget may have to pick one over the other.
