Upset city

Three games into the Big East tournament and three victories by the lower seeds.

It started many, many hours ago when Sky Lindsay hit a jumper in the lane with 1.9 seconds to play to lift No. 13 St. John's to a 63-61 win over No. 12 Syracuse.

Kahla Roudebush had 19 points and Jill Stephens, who was named the Big East's Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Friday, had 11 points and 11 rebounds in No. 16 Cincinnati's 60-54 win over No. 9 Marquette - a loss that figures to have squashed the Golden Eagles' already slim hopes of receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

No. 15 Seton Hall, which shot 26 for 43 from the free-throw line and had a 46-33 advantage in rebounding, upset No. 10 Georgetown 70-45.

The first two games were intriguing because of the plight of the team's senior stars.

For St. John's, Monique McLean was suspended indefinitely (or thrown off the team if you wish to put it bluntly) and yet the Red Storm managed to rally from an 11-point deficit in the final 12:08 to beat Syracuse in overtime.

Krystal Ellis, Marquette's all-time leading scorer, was in uniform but in crunch time was reduced to the role of reluctant spectator. Ellis played just 2:04 of the final 8:45 of the second half and 5 minutes over overtime. Ellis played just 38 seconds in overtime even though she had no fouls and the Golden Eagles were struggling on offense.

The third game was more noteworthy because of the 57 fouls called and 79 free throws attempted by Seton Hall and Georgetown.

At halftime of the final game, No. 14 Providence is up six on West Virginia.
